Closing Submission in David Hunter Case in Paphos to Take Place on 22 June 2023

JUSTICE ABROAD

“Here When You Need Us”

Justice Abroad represents Mr David Hunter, a 75-year-old British man who is facing murder charges in Cyprus after the death of his wife, Janice Hunter, who was suffering from blood cancer. Justice Abroad has assembled a top team of lawyers to fight for David Hunter, including Nicoletta Charalambidou, an experienced human rights advocate, and Ritsa Pekri, a criminal law expert on this case.

On Tuesday, 23 May 2023, witnesses for the Defence gave evidence for David Hunter. Mr Helmut Kesting, a German neighbour who lived on the same street as the Hunter’s, gave evidence that David Hunter was a very quiet and reasonable man who was very proud of his marriage to Janice Hunter. Mr Kesting was asked to describe the Hunter's relationship and he said: "Very very good relationship. They did everything together. Janice was also very proud - once they invited us to their home and showed us many photos of the past together, their trips together. I never heard any shouting, never any fighting. It was full of harmony in their relationship."

Mrs Hunter’s hairdresser also gave evidence and stated that David Hunter would bring Janice to the salon on a weekly basis.  She described how everyone working with her was jealous of the loving relationship between the couple. She also stated that Janice had told her that she was sick with leukaemia, was in a lot of pain, and that she couldn’t sleep,  “she understood she didn’t have much time left. Last time she came she was very sad, she cried."

Closing submissions are to take place at Paphos Courthouse on 22 June 2023.

Michael Polak of Justice Abroad stated “the evidence shows that this was a long and loving marriage and that David acted as he did because of his wife’s requests and the pain she was in after refusing to do so on a number of occasions. This was not a pre-planned event, as is shown by the fact that he tried to commit suicide using the over the counter medicine that was in their property rather than purchasing something stronger. We will be putting arguments before the Court which show that David is not guilty of premeditated murder.”

The extended nature of the proceedings, and the potential for a possible appeal meant funds are needed to fight for David.
