“Here When You Need Us”

Justice Abroad represents Mr David Hunter, a 75-year-old British man who is facing murder charges in Cyprus after the death of his wife, Janice Hunter, who was suffering from terminal blood cancer. Justice Abroad has assembled a top team of lawyers to fight for David Hunter, including Nicoletta Charalambidou, an experienced human rights advocate, and Ritsa Pekri, a criminal law expert on this case.

Today, 9 May 2023, and yesterday, the Prosecution called their final witnesses.

On 8 May 2023, the Prosecution called the Police Officer in charge of Interpol communications who described receiving an urgent flash alert from Manchester Interpol which included information that David had tried to commit suicide.

A pathologist then gave evidence stating that he received results from the state pathologist indicating that Janice had leukaemia but would have needed to do a bone marrow test (myelogram) to confirm whether the disease had developed from blood cancer (MDS) to leukaemia and that in 45% of cases the disease develops in this way.

On 9 May 2023, the Prosecution called their final witness, a haematologist who had treated Janice. She confirmed that Janice’s health condition was getting worse, that Janice was in a lot of pain, and that she was suffering from other symptoms. She recalled how Janice presented a myelogram from a private provider in 2016 when she had her first appointment and agreed that a myelogram was the best way to test a patient’s precise medical condition. It was suggested that a myelogram should have been undertaken between 2016 and 2021 when Janice’s treatment was escalated from EPA injections to blood transfusions. It was also suggested to the Doctor that based on the symptoms from which Janice was suffering she was likely to have only survived for between 2 months to 2 years. The Doctor responded that she would be unable to reject this suggestion without conducting a myelogram.

The next hearing in the case will take place on Monday 15 May 2023 at 9.30am at Paphos Assize Court where David will give evidence.

Michael Polak has stated the following:

“This remains a sad case where the evidence shows David and Janice were in a long-lasting loving marriage that David attempted to take his own life.

It has taken considerable time, but we are at the point where David finally has the opportunity to give evidence as to what has taken place. The trial has been difficult for him however he is looking forward to giving evidence on Monday’.
